Thoughts

Household name Adam takes names with the big stompy robots as IK continue their sudden charge to the top. Canis stays at home in place of two enhancement carrying big lads – Mysterious Guardian is an excellent honesty policy, forcing the opponent to keep those angles covered all game long, and Mythic Hero helps you dole out some additional Bondsmen abilities. Chuck in Armigers and some cover stripping from an Immolator and you’re ready to wreck faces. Well done on the event win!

Thoughts

The Guard builds have started settling down into a groove now – chuck a Dorn with some Leman Russ, get transports full of Kasrkin out ahead, and decide on your preference of one or two big bricks of Krieg. In Combined Regiment this all gets to shoot considerably harder, and you can bring back a key unit via Reinforcements! At some stage to boot. Guard just pack a tonne of stuff to play mission and control space with, and if you can’t chew through the wide mix of profiles quickly, you’re in for a sad day. Congratulations!

Thoughts

Two Wraith bricks AND a Warrior brick here for full Awakened Dynasty stat-checking goodness. Necrons have found their detachment for the times and getting characters back up and never letting that Warrior brick die is back in vogue once again! Loving the enhancements on the triple Skorpekh Lord – these are the coolest thing in the list and carry the redeploy and the feel no pain exceptionally well. Great list! Well done on the top placing.

Ynnari Goodstuff

Thoughts

The Yncarne / Wraithlords variant of Ynnari takes a top spot here, and the combination of solid objective pushers and brutal Lethal Intent plays if you shoot them is really quite something. Between the lords, Reapers and Fire Dragons this list has plenty of hard-target removal, which is something the Death Elves occasionally fall down on. A Wave Serpent feels a must in Ynnari right now to force a really brutal reactive move at some stage if the foe slipes up. Great work on the top placing!

Thoughts

Ok then! Two current meta menaces have at it, as the Ynnari take their antics into the claws of the Chaos Knights. The Ynnari list is packing much of what makes the faction strong as the moment – huge Reaper bricks to fire away at range, forcing you either to kill them and trigger Lethal Intent, half kill them and get shot back at in your own turn, or ignore them and, well, get shot more. Fun ain’t it! There are some transport shenanigans with the Wave Serpent and Venom and Banshees make up the Fights First melee contingent. It is very, very good at picking apart shooting and mixed armies on it’s own terms.

What it is a little less good at, is fighting a full skew of Vehicles with great OC and battle-shocking who don’t actually have to shoot it if they don’t feel like. The Chaos Knights list packs tonnes of War Dogs, but also multiple Nurgling and Beast units to force bad trades. Beasts of Nurgle are especially obnoxious for Ynnari – none of the melee units really want to fight them, and no shooting unit you could send is a good trade! Massed indirect does the CK no harm either though as ever with Ynnari, the key is to recognise when shooting anything at all will make things worse rather than better. I suspect with the tools available the Ynnari are going to feel pressured to make things happen in this match up – when they do, I’m not entirely sure they have enough pieces to keep up with the rate of attrition. In the end this went down as a medium CK win!

Thoughts

Whatever dark pact the Chaos Knights have made with Nurgle this edition, it’s held up extremely well. As alluded to above, Beasts of Nurgle are a delightful early trade piece / scoring option for CK, and Nurglings help you block and get into hard to reach places without giving up valuable assets. CK in general sit in a very solid place in the game with a full skew that is obnoxious for many armies teching for each other to manage. Really well done on the event win!

Thoughts

Tyranids have been casting around for the way forwards lately, and Crusher seems to have had a great weekend! Triple Norn / multiple Tfex is a very potent skew that packs an awful lot of OC for someone looking to dig them out from behind cover. The Tyrant keeps the strat support going and allows the army to spring forwards with ASSAULT and LETHAL HITs at a key moment. Very scary, is this the skew the Hivemind need right now?! Very well done on the event win Kenneth!

Ultramarines Vanguard

Thoughts

One of the classic marine builds of the addition claims another event win, as uppy-downy Centurions, MSU, and the Ultramarines characters go to town. Vanguard thrives on certain terrain types even after nerfs to Ventris altered their delivery systems, and still packs a sensational bag of tricks for bamboozling the foe. At their new, cheaper price point Blade Guard are a wonderful low-investment caddy for Blade Driven Deep to give you some crucial early board presence with a Judiciar. Awesome to see this continuing to thrive. Really well done on the event win!

The Best of the Rest

There were 4 more players on 4-1+ records. They were:

2nd (4.5-0.5) – Ashley Brown – Emperor’s Children (Coterie of the Conceited): Triple Daemon Prince / Noise Marines in Coteries, excellent stuff.
3rd – Patrick Dawson – Imperial Knights (Noble Lance): Pure mech here, with Canis, a Cerastus, and ALL the Armigers.
4th – Matthew Harrington – Adeptus Custodes (Lions of the Emperor): A very spicy six Guard units in this punchy Lions build – it will absolutely wreck face when it connects!
5th – James Clark – Adeptus Custodes (Lions of the Emperor): Another massed Guard and Allarus build – are Custodes players moving away from Wardens?! Huge if true!

Wrap Up

There you have it folks – the Imperium hit back hard with a bunch of solid placings for Knights, Marines and Custodes, but the forces of Xenos and Chaos continue to hold their own too. An awful lot of builds in the mix – but how will the arrival of Death Guard and World Eaters shape things?! We should know pretty soon!
