Night was always beautiful on Spencer, even when the Pirates were coming down in force.
A twisting tapestry of all the colors the universe had to play with filled the sky as the sun settled beyond the horizon. My mother had always said it reminded her of oil on the sea, churning and shimmering in the inky void, to me it just looked like home. Every night that I got to look up into that star filled sky on an exercise was another day I thanked every power that could be for the life I led.
But tonight? Tonight wasn’t an exercise.
The old Longbow LGB-14C beneath me groaned, her systems letting out a sigh of relief as we ground to a stop a few paces behind Sargent Reyes in our OZ. Reyes shot off a few orders, giving Dahlgren and Kathy in their Hawkwolfs their battery positions before trudging to his as we settled in to provide overwatch for the rest of the Curiassiers below. We’d been waiting, days now, since the pair of Unions had been detected wavering from their submitted landing paths and now they were finally coming down . The sight of dropship plumes cutting through the nebula filled sky was as striking now through the old weathered transpex that adorned Rooster’s cockpit as it was the first time I had seen it.
But nowhere near as scary.
We worked in silence but for the target calls coming down from the line, hammering down flight after flight of heavy rain on the pirates below as they harried and harassed our compatriots on the battle line. It was a slow rolling fight, the two forces poking and prodding at each other as the Third’s forward elements did what they could to keep the pirates contained. A dazzling light show spearing through the night as beam and shot broke many of the mass of pirates beneath the third’s heavy blows while they corralled their remaining quarry into position for the hammer the air wing was just waiting to drop. It was working.
And then it wasn’t.
A pair of Lances slammed through the cordon, breaking away as fast as they could manage. One dove for the woodline, zipping off into the wilderness, while the other made a beeline straight for us. A lance of beaten and battered heavies and mediums, with a token QRF chasing after them, bore down on us as fast as they could manage.
“Lieutenant, heads up, we’ve got incoming.” Reyes grumbled, the bulk of his Longbow LGB-10C stepping back from the firing line as it let another heavy salvo fly.
“I see them, Sargent.” I assured, pushing past the man, locking Rooster’s Tartrac in on the smoldering Thunderbolt leading the charge at the Lance’s head. “Dahlgren, Kathy, do what you can about that Wolverine.”
“Affirmative, Ma’am.” Kathy acknowledged, her and Dahlgren backing down before sending their fusilade of shooting stars streaking across the night sky down onto the approaching ‘Mech.
“Solution found.” Rooster’s onboard system stated, the harsh howl of a lock alarm drilling through her cockpit as I pulled back on her yokes, hauling all 85 tons of her to a stop before dragging her around on target against the Thunderbolt. The heavy ‘Mech closed as I fumbled with the launch switches, triggering minimum range proximity warnings before the satisfied hum of her doors swinging open filled the cabin alongside the solid clack of the ammo feed line toggle flipping over. “Primary Munitions Loaded: Short Range Missiles – Tandem Warhead.”
Rooster shuddered beneath me, the deluge of missiles being put to air as they spun and spiraled towards the Thunderbolt before engulfing it in a cacophony of fire that only grew as its own missile bin cooked off. My eyes burned with stinging sweat as the weight of the salvo crushed the machine’s cooling system, sending a wave of alarms and system warnings singing through the cockpit. What was left of the Lance stumbled from the smoke cloud that had been the Thunderbolt, glancing around before pointing at Reyes and I as Rooster’s loading trays groaned into place.
“Here they come to snuff the Rooster…”

Howdy ‘Mechwarriors and welcome back to another ‘Mech Overview! This week we plant our feet 8 miles from the front line and let the missiles fly with one of the most built for purpose ‘Mechs in the game: The Longbow!
The true trashcan supreme of the armless ‘Mechs the Longbow has always been a favorite of mine for its looks since I’ve always been a sucker for a good artillery unit and the Longbow really sells the vibe. Much like a real artillery ‘Mech the Longbow is often low on protection or secondary options which means you really have to think about what you’re going to be doing with it when you’re taking a Longbow along.
As well there are a fucking shitload of Longbows, 18 in total, and they’ve been being produced since the fucking dawn of time all the way into the modern era.
Oh boy… some of these are gonna be funny as fuck, and some are going to be absolute shit. Welp, let’s get into it. Without further ado I present: The Longest Bow in town.

Table of Contents
Chassis
The Longbow really only has three things in common across the chassis:
- 85 tons.
- No Lower Arm Actuators.
- Shit loads of ammo.
The armor? Incredibly Variable. The weapons? Mostly missiles but there are some weirdos. The speed? Mostly 3/5 but there are a few weirdos. When a ‘Mech has existed for this long and has this many variants there are going to be plenty of variance to go through. Of note is the fact that many Longbows would greatly benefit from the changes to ammo put forward in the Playtest packets.
Variant
These mechs have all been reviewed based on a standard F through S scale, which you can find described on our landing page here (along with all of our other ‘Mech reviews, the name of the box you can buy to get any of the mechs we have covered, and our general methodology).
LGB-0C
Oh god… Welp, this is certainly a way to start.
The 0C is the OG, at least timeline wise, Primitive Longbow. Produced in 2480 this is an antique with armor that would be shit on a 65 ton Heavy, let alone an 85 ton Assault, this thing is poorly protected. But what it lacks in armor it makes up for in usable, incredibly cheap, armaments.
A pair of LRM 20s, two MLs, and a small laser make up the 0C’s offensive complement. Supported by 15 single heat sinks it goes up 4+ movement on an alpha strike. But with banding like this you’re likely never going to be alpha striking. Workably negative on the long range and short range bands the 0C is a pretty alright bargain for a backline support brick at 1,295BV.
That said I’d probably never pay the price with the fact that it has a total of 23 health in the arms. That’s it. Having any forward facing arc not be ppc proof on an 85 ton assault, even when cheap as dirt, really is a shame. Pair that with the fact that 3/4ths of the crit slots in either torso are ammo and you’ve got a perfect recipe for the ‘Mech that a particularly stubborn breeze could kill.
Liberty’s Rating: D+. Usable but even for the price this thing is going to die, or be rendered ineffective, far too often.
LGB-0H
COME ON DOWN TO YOUR LOCAL MARIAN ARMS DEALER TODAY AND GET THE CUTTING EDGE IN DIRECT FIRE SOLUTIONS! DO YOU HAVE SOME PESKY DO-GOODER BASTARDS IN YOUR WAY AND YOU WANT THEM GONE? WELL LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE LGB-0H! YOU’LL HAVE YOUR ENEMIES SAYING ‘OH’ IN NO TIME!*
*Rocket Launcher Reloads not included, Marian Arms is a sole source distributor for the ‘Mech and bears no responsibility in assisting the customer with supply chain solutions or dealing with riots from their ‘techs based on long, manual, reload times.
The Marians have been doing copious amounts of battle powder in the bathroom again and its showing. They have taken an otherwise perfectly fine Longbow and made the strangest possible Longbows possible.
And I love it.
This thing is hilarious. It’s an AC/20 proof Assault ‘Mech with 2 PPCs and enough heat sinking to keep them neutral on the run for 1,813 BV. Now, that may not sound like a lot but that’s not what this is here for. This is an 88% armored, 85 ton, 4/6 pissile meant to beeline it to the nearest target of opportunity before opening its trashcan doors and showing them its hand.
All 260 tubes of it.
That’s right, this mother fucker has 26 Rocket Launcher 10s in it.
Why?
Dude I don’t fucking know.
Heat? It’s bad. Rippling off all the rockets off builds 80, 100 if you throw the PPCs on too. With a machine only capable of sinking 22 heat hitting that button is going to shut you down for a while. That said if you land that salvo right? Dear god help the guy on the other end of it because he’s about to be in a world of shit.
In reality you want to be rippling them off in around sets of 6 as that’s heat negative…
I mean if you’re like a coward or something.
Liberty’s Rating: C+. Holy fuck this thing is funny. Is it effective? I mean… it might be?
LGB-0W
The Old Style. The Bread and Butter. The Basic of Bitch.
Take the Primitive 0C. Got one? Ok, make everything an intro tech standard state, standard engine, standard armor, standard cockpit. Ok. Good.
Now, use this tonnage to swap the MLs for LRM 5s and 2 tons of ammo… also ditch two heat sinks.
This is 1337 BV. The armor is the same, the guns are somehow worse since it no longer has backup options, and it’s got CT ammo in it. Also it goes 4/6 now.
Cool.
Absolute trash can, much like its arms.
Liberty’s Rating: D. Somehow worse than the Primitive. How’ve you managed this?
LGB-0W2
The dumbest field refit in the west.
Drop a ton of LRM 5 ammo from the CT and make it into armor. This is 1,410 BV now.
… Cool???
Why???
Who made this record sheet? Why? To what end? Can they stop doing that?
Liberty’s Rating: D. I… god the early Longbows are fuckin’ stupid.
LGB-7Q
This is… better?
Take an 0W2 and slow it down to 3/5. Now take all the saved tonnage and put it into Heat Sinks, for a total of 22 of them now, Medium Lasers, and armor.
Now we’re AC/20 proof all over and have the heat load to alpha strike and only build movement heat.
For 1,618 BV this is leagues more competent…
Even if it is still just a fucking 0W with a fresh coat of paint. Succession war ‘Mechwarriors can’t be beggars, I guess.
Liberty’s Rating: C. Useful enough for the price but I really wish it balanced things out to have a Large Laser to support the minimum envelope on the LRMs just a touch better.

LGB-7V
YOU THOUGHT I WAS A LRM BOAT? GUESS WHAT MOTHERFUCKER, I’VE GOT TICKETS TO A LIGHT SHOW TO SELL YOU AND EVERY HEX CLOSER IS ANOTHER 10% OFF.
The 7V is a 7Q with some serious work done. For one the LRM-5s are gone and the 20s now have Artemis IV and 3 tons of ammo a piece. As well the 22 single heat sinks have become 14 doubles and the old Standard engine is now an XL. This is a good clip of weight savings so what did the 7V do with it?
Simple: Lasers.
An ERLL and 5 MPLs, to be specific. This is up 18 on a running alpha strike which isn’t great. But, because LRMs, you never really want to be alphaing anyone. With the long range guns you’re down 2 on a run, once the MPLs get in close you can salvo them all off and be down 6 on a run. Honestly quite usable heat management.
For 1,816 BV this is a very good self reliant support piece that can get some good work done while also being able to take punting little shithead lights into the dirt on its own perfectly fine with all of its MPLs.
Liberty’s Rating: B-. Quite useful and reasonably priced! Love a good big boy support brick!
LGB-8C
Back lasers are all the rage! Let’s have some!
It’s a 7Q that trades two heat sinks for rear facing Medium Lasers.
For 1,653 BV… hooray?
Liberty’s Rating: C. Still useful but paying extra just to have back lasers is probably not super worth it so I’ll just leave the rating the same, I guess?
LGB-8V
The Kaboomen-shitzen machine has trundled into position.
Take a 7V and strip out all the guns except for two of the MPLs and the ERLL. Now, spend all the fresh weight on a pair of Arrow IV launchers and 6 tons of ammo… two of which are in the legs because its where they have to go.
For 1,808 BV this is… honestly quite useful for a big support piece in a large game. It can handle itself if it gets interdicted, kind of, while helping to sling heavy rounds on targets for just about as long as you really need it to. If you’re using the modified Arrow IV rules for homing rounds in BMM this is a hilarious machine and works great when paired with a TAG friend… or 3.
I like this thing and have been looking for a game to put it to field in for a while now, I’ll get one at some point!
Liberty’s Rating: B+. Note that this is a B+ in the world of artillery ‘Mechs. It’s a quite good artillery ‘mech. In a normal game it’s probably gonna struggle to do much unless you do a lot of work to get it in a good spot to hammer down some heavy shells.
LGB-10C
A weird 7V with an SFE?
The 10C takes the 7V, drops the XL for a standard engine and swaps out all the lasers to get its LRM 5s back, now with Artemis IV like the 20 boxes, and 4 ERMLs… 2 of which face backwards.
In its bands the heat is fine but I’m really starting to feel like I’m just sinking into a morass of ‘how many ways can I put a pair of LRM-20s and a pair of LRM-5s on an 85 tonner’ that’s getting real fucking boring real fucking fast.
This is 1,898 BV which is fine. It’s an alrightly armored LRM box that just wants to drop warheads on foreheads and can survive an ammo explosion ripping a torso off. Good enough for me.
Liberty’s Rating: C+. Weird 7V gets weird 7V rating. God I’m drowning in the LRM two step, somebody please hel-
LGB-10K
SURPRISE MOTHER FUCKER.
The 10K is the jack in the box. A machine made for Lyrans, and oddly Pirates, to get the drop on people who do not realize what they’ve signed up for. Missiles are lame, and so are you for wanting them.
So, what exactly do we have here? Simple. This is a 7V that has dropped everything that isn’t the ERLL or the head mounted MPL for a pair of UAC/20s. It is meant to act as though it is a 7V that has run the bins dry of munitions, plinking at the target with its ERLLs as it closes in until it gets juuuuust close enough to swing the doors open and let loose the weight of the world upon its target.
Good god this thing is hilarious. Sure it goes up 4+ movement when ripping off the UACs but that’s fine. A little bit of thought and you can manage that impulse pretty well, and for 1,791 BV it is quite the cost effective way to bring this big of a hammer down on someone while packing enough armor to really drive the point home. Honestly this thing is just a fat as shit Hunchback IIC and I love him for it.
Liberty’s Rating: B+. Go forth and kill in the name of the Grand Archon you must smite all who stand before you.
LGB-12C
More missiles for the missile boy. You either drip or drown and brother this fuckin’ thing’s making some Heavy Rain.
The 12C is, once again, a mod of the 7V but with less armor, no MPLs or ERLLs, and 2 fewer heat sinks. What does it do with this copious amount of free tonnage?
Simple: A pair of LRM15s with Art IV to accompany the 20s and their ART IV, making it heat neutral on the run when salvoing both off, and a trio of ERSLs. OH YEA! Also another 3 tons of ammunition, for a total of 9 FUCKING TONS OF AMMO. When one of these ammo dumps go off you can see this fucking thing from orbit.
At 1,686 BV though this is a very cost effective way to get this heavy of an LRM broadside to bear on things. It does have a pretty bad band at 5 hexes where things can kite all of its guns on kind of annoying shots but with proper planning you can play around that to keep the 12C in the fight. Just uh… Just don’t let the side torso armor fall off or you’ll be sending the Pilot home in a tupperware set, not a pine box.
Liberty’s Rating: B-. Look this is a cheap assault class support piece with some real teeth. Cheap and useful enough to possibly consider strapping a flexible blocking unit to your front line who’s secondary job is to just harass anything that tries to intercept him.
LGB-12R
An exercise, futilely, in survivability and restraint!
The 12R is another entry in the ‘assault with missiles but different’ category of Longbows. Moving 3/5/3 with 11 double heat sinks the 12R is powered by a Light Fusion Engine which at least makes it so that when one of its 8 TONS OF AMMUNITION goes off the CASE will actually keep it alive. So, what’s eating these 8 tons of ammo?
4 LRM 15s supported by an ERLL and a singular ERML.
I have a question: Why?
Why not 4 more ERMLs and an extra sink? It’d make more sense heat wise and would make a ‘Mech that wants to be bracket firing actually able to do it. As it currently stands you have 16 full tilt salvos of LRMs, an amount liable to hammer through just about any target(s) you’re pointing at both in and out of universe.
Also, why does it jump? For what purpose? I assume to get to hard to reach firing positions but that just seems like an odd thing to aim for with a big beef cannon of an assault when things like the Catapult series, the Archer 7L, and the Crusader series exist. So, for this oddball machine that has plenty of heavy class competitors, how much do you pay?
1,979 BV which can also be read as the most expensive Longbow.
Liberty’s Rating: C-. It’s usable but I do not like this kind of price tag for something that’s just… kinda a poor use of what it’s aiming to do. Maybe the ERML change would be enough to get it in a more useful, if also more expensive, spot.
LGB-13C
Why hello there little guy, how are you doing today? What’s that? A concerning lack of flexible platform solutions in your life? Well have I got the solution for you!
Alright, I’ll be honest, I use the 13C a lot. I love this thing, it’s a terror machine that hates you and fully intends to make your life as difficult as possible. How does it do this? Well, for one, it goes 4/6 and has AC/20 proof armor, even if just barely, all over. The XL engine is a downside but it’s pulling a helluva job letting the 13C haul in 6 MML7s with ART IVs. Oh, also a trio of ERSLs which… are certainly there!
Now, in the LRM world this isn’t really much of anything, in fact it’s kinda eh with only 2 more missiles overall than the old 7V and coming from far worse cluster tables than the 20s. But in the SRM world?
Oh boy.
This machine, with its 6 tons of ammunition and movement heat when firing all the MMLs, is a bastard. Got an enemy with some heat inefficient ‘Mechs or annoying BA? I assure you you will be able to hit the external heat cap or wipe that squad clean off the table with infernos. Wanna lay a minefield? Bitch you can lay 6 of them at once. Dispense a full size smoke screen? Fuck a screen, make a cloud. Want to burn every hex of good woods on the map? Incendiaries will happily get it done.
‘But Liberty!’ You cry, knowing all too well that your local group are a bunch of lamos that won’t let you play with funny ammo types. ‘What if I can’t use the MML’s godlike versatility to smite my enemies?’
Simple: they’ve got fucking Artemis on them. This is 42 SRMs off the rail while only building movement heat. Just beat them to death.
Ok but obviously for this much fun we’re gonna have to pay out the nose, right? Wrong. 1,397 BV. That’s it. This thing is nearly at listfiller prices and it’s a steal for the cost.
Liberty’s Rating: A-. Cheap, useful, and hateful the 13C is a personal favorite and a longtime friend. Go forth and beat people to death with it, trust me it’s fun.
LGB-13NAIS
I’ve said before that the funniest things the Davions have either come from NAIS or have a GM badge on them, today we’ve got some NAIS fuckery to gawk at.
This is my other most used Longbow next to the 13C and it’s hilarious. Missiles are lame, and you shouldn’t use them. Instead you should use a whole bunch of guns so you can shower your enemy in shells.
This thing is maximum beef for the Longbow family with 100% of the armor its 85 ton frame can handle cladding a Standard Fusion Engine with its 10 internal Double Heat sinks to propel it to the normal 3/5 profile we’ve grown used to by now. So, what is it doing with all those guns?
Well, let’s run through them:
- Six, yes Six, LAC-5s for maximum six gun fun.
- Two ER Medium Lasers because they had the space… in the legs.
- One(1) ER Small Lasers because there was an extra half ton sitting around.
- Two Anti-BA pods to tell little dudes to go away.
- A Guardian ECM Suite, because E-War is the best War.
- A C3 Slave so that it can get those guns very on target.
- Seven Tons of Ammunition.
That’s right, Seven Tons. That’s 140 shells, or 70 rounds of precision.
70. Rounds. Of. Precision.
This thing, though it may not look it, is a Light ‘Mech’s nightmare. I’ve used it to pummel Fire Moths into the dirt on cooldown before and it is a blast. Sure the side torsos are just ammo but it’s CASEd and it has an SFE so that’s whatever and sure the LAC/5’s range doesn’t play well with a 3/5 movement profile but that really doesn’t matter when you’ve got 6 of them to rattle off. If I’m honest at this point I think of this thing as less of a six pack of LAC/5s and more as a weird ass RAC/5 I can actually load precision into and it has made me wildly more entertained by it.
This thing is the king of 5 point hits and, more importantly, the only thing that Peri and I ever think of when we say ‘sometimes a spare small laser can be useful. This is the only time we’ve ever seen the emotional support ERSL do something, namely ripping out the leg components on a Dragon that got in its face, sending it to the ground and securing a victory for me. Not kidding, that game was decided by a small laser hit.
For 1,804 BV she’s a bit expensive for a machine that just shit’s 8 heat neutral 5 pointers but for a real Assault ‘Mech with real Assault ‘Mech armor and strange capabilities… Honestly, it’s great.
Liberty’s Rating: B+. CHATTA-CHATTA-CHATTA-CHATTA-CHATTA-CHATTA- Fire Moth explodes in the distance.

LGB-14C
13C 2 MML9 Boogaloo.
Alright, take a 13C, now down engine it back to ⅗ and use the extra tonnage to bump the armor levels and convert the MML-7s into MML-9s, without Artemis, and the ERSLs into ERMLs. Another two tons of ammo for more ammo choices, better armor, bigger launchers, and better secondary weapons? Sick! What did you do about the increased heat?
Nothing?
Oh, hm… It goes up how much on a full missile strike?
10 plus movement?
Ah. And where’s the extra ammo gone?
Oh, the legs? Well that’s not great.
This is really the entire difference between the 14 and 13Cs. Where the 13C is a reasonable application of restraint and function the 14 goes just a step too far. A step that would have been better served doing what you could to just make a 13C with MML9s instead of fiddling with enough things that a full MML salvo of infernos would have a chance of setting the rest of the ones waiting in the bin off. Add to that the fact that this thing has sweet delicious leg armor and I know our local BA sickos are licking their lips at the idea of reaching in there and punching a few primers.
It’s only a touch more expensive than the 13C at 1,421 BV but man is it worse. A disappointment, if I’m honest.
Liberty’s Rating: C-. How far the C’s have fallen, a true shame. Still cheap as hell but it’s just so much less efficient than the 13C.
LGB-14C2
CAN’T YOU FUCKERS LEAVE SHITTY ENOUGH ALONE???
TAKE A 14C. GOT ONE? GOOD. NOW FUCK IT UP EVEN MORE. HOW? EASY: A SMALL FUCKING COCKPIT AND 2 LESS ERMLS. WHY? SO IT COULD HAVE A FUCKING C3 BOOSTED SLAVE IN IT. WHY? I DON’T FUCKING KNOW.
HOW MUCH? 1,291BV. DO I CARE? NO.
Liberty’s Rating: C-. At least it can be even cheaper while it fucking detonates.
LGB-14Q
Oh boy! LGB-7V but different land again!
Yup, it’s just another weird LGB-7V. So, what’s been done here? For one, engine has been upsized to let it go 4/6. Two, the ART IV on the LRM-20s, a heat sink, the ERLL, and the pile of MPLs are gone, in their place is a pair of MML 5s with 2 tons of ammunition to share, a quartet of ERMLs and CASE II.
Also two of the ERMLs are pointing aft, for reasons. This is 1,828 BV and, largely, on all the same avails as the 7V. For 12 less BV I’d honestly take the 7V over this just about all the time. Neither of them have heat problems, neither of them have armor issues, and neither of them have glaring flaws that the other doesn’t but I really would prefer having a pile of MPLs to tell people to go away with.
Liberty’s Rating: C+. Please god let me out of the LRM garage, I hate it here. I need to talk to my manager on Kathil, this is bullshit.
LGB-14V
Oh, MRM time.
This is a 14Q which is just a 7V which is just a fucked up and evil 7Q and I just… I wanna go home. This just take a 14Q and rips all the armament out of it except the rear facing ERMLs so that it can replace them with a pair of MRM 20s with Apollo FCSs, a pair of LRM 5s, for fun I guess, gives it two more heat sinks, and straps a pair of LPPCs on for good measure.
I don’t know what the fuck is going on here, it’s useful enough, I guess? The ranges don’t line up enough to really make you want to push and try to over heat it on an alpha. Then again even if you did fire all the forward facing weapons at once you’d still be heat neutral.
For 1,763 BV I just… look man there are better MRM trucks in this price range and this thing is all over the place in its attempts at doing something useful.
Liberty’s Rating: D+. This is expensive for what it is and I’m so tired of mediocre Longbow variants.
Oh god that’s the last one… Finally. I think this is what Peri felt like after the Warhammer article. I need a beer.
Final Thoughts
There are a fucking LOT of Longbows. Some would even say too many Longbows. This is exacerbated by the fact that like half of these fucking things are just the same ‘Mech but rotated 1.49 degrees to the left or something. The ones that standout are hilarious and the rest of them are just… monotony incarnate.
There’s quite a few things I feel are missing here for wild funny hell machines. Some kind of Clan hell boat, in both Streak, LRM, and ATM variants, an energy boat of some variety that pops the doors open to reveal that it was actually the anti-light mech inator 9000 as it sets off the pulse laser disco, and just a good old fashioned heavy hitting MRM-40 boat. Genuinely though, why in god’s name is there no Clan equipped Longbow? It’s not some austerity boat it’s a genuine field piece that’s got some prestige and weight behind it so why in god’s name has no one in the IS, or even just the Foxes, decided to make the true clan hell boat that a Longbow could be.
At the very least the damned thing looks cool I guess.
Until next time! Fair weather, good seas, and happy trash-can-arm-waggling!
