Welcome to Competitive Innovations, our weekly feature for a number of game lines across the tabletop wargame space. Each week our army list and tactics experts canvass the top tournaments for their game of specialty, looking at the week’s top match-ups and how they played out on the tabletop to let you know what’s hot, what’s not, and what might be coming next as the competitive meta evolves year-round.
Statistically, you are far less likely than normal to be reading this at the time it drops, because today is the London Grand Tournament in the UK (the biggest 40K event ever) and the Challengers Cup in the US, which will eat a good chunk of our audience in both those countries.
If you are reading this hot off the press, then Lowest of Men is probably on the UKTC TV Stream right now, so go check that out at UKTC TV.

Thoughts
The Aeldari menace faces a new challenger here – the massively boosted forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus, showing off all their new tricks. Variously, you have Cawl providing Oaths, which makes the army way more deadly, and specifically helps out stuff with Sustained Hits like the Corpuscarii priests, who can go fishing for infinity hits. Elsewhere, Ruststalkers could already zoom across the battlefield when required, but can now lean on the re-rolls to reliably turn any Infantry target into a fine mist, and the Ironstriders are back to 9th edition levels of point-click-dead for any heavy targets.
This is a problem for the Aeldari, as there is a lot of stuff here that kills them stone dead, and they really don’t love the challenge of trying to lift large numbers of 2W models with invulnerable saves, especially when some of those are layered within Transports. There’s a good number of speedy scoring units on the Aeldari side at least, which gives them some agency to try and play cagey here, but I think the mission undermines that. Because of how fast the Ruststalkers are, at some point the AdMech are going to be able to stage a unit to make a play for the Aeldari’s home objective, and even in variants of this where careful play keeps the Aeldari level, at best they’re aiming for a narrow win in this game. Even one big anti-Linchpin pivot turn feels like it puts this out of reach for them, and they don’t have a good way of turning that around on the AdMech. There’s such a depth of stuff in the AdMech army that ruins the Aeldari that even if they engage fairly positively and everything goes right, they might still just lose everything on the swingback – the Corpuscarii in particular are a nightmare in this game.
I think the Craftworlds have to play very defensively and try to keep the score for both sides down, then swing for the win later on, but obviously that’s tough if they go first. There feel like very few versions of this game that go right for the elves, and I’m thus not hugely surprised to see the AdMech take it.

Thoughts
The results are rolling in, and initial suggestions are that “screw it, Cawl has Oaths now” may, in fact, finally fix the AdMech. Re-rolls turbo charge some nearly there units like Corpuscarii, and Ruststalkers find themselves in a fairly target-rich environment anyway – they will happily butcher squishy elves or melee Marines with equal aplomb. As long as Cawl stays alive, everything in this list is a big threat, and that gives it a huge bench of resources that few armies can match. This looks like a very strong take on how to use all the new toys, so well done Kjetil for assembling it.

Thoughts
A streamlined hybrid of what we’ve seen out of the Aspect and Warhost builds of Aeldari thus far, going for the extra punch from four Phoenix Aspects, but still maxing out on scoring stuff, and having two power Transports. That means you need to be looking for safer flanks to utilise Maugan Ra’s unit on if you want Fuegan doing stuff too, but you can also just lean on whichever is most appropriate to the matchup, and Maugan’s stick is definitely on the up right now with a bunch of 2W stuff that hates Battle Shock out there. Well done to Sveinung on taking second place.

Lion Wrath
Thoughts
Another big Dataslate beneficiary here, as unsurprisingly giving the Lion a big boost makes the strategy of pushing him forward with a bunch of Deathwing Knights even better. In addition, being able to have both the redeploy and anti-Mortal Wound ability up makes it far more likely you’ll actually use some of the big blowout plays you can do with him – no more worrying about your opponent shrugging then Grenade/Tank Shocking him to death immediately. This build leans in on that by setting up one of the Deathwing squads to go for an early Deep Strike too with Deathwing Assault, letting you fully go for the throat if you don’t think the enemy can handle it.
The Lion is also another very powerful tool into enemy melee Marines, or indeed Ruststalkers as above; if he has his re-roll aura on, he’ll literally just kill a whole squad on Fights First which uh, reduces their utility somewhat. Support that with a classic suite of powerful Marine units, and Azrael’s CP farming, and you have a very potent list that can cover most bases very effectively. Great stuff from Jonathan.

Thoughts
Look, it’s never a great sign when a dominant strategy gets specifically targeted with points hikes and just shrugs and continues, but what are you gonna do. Many Hawks lets you bury the foe in Mortal Wounds and high volume firepower, and I’d certainly say that if AdMech are strong, sticking with them seems solid, as they take big chunks out of Ruststalker units. You also still get to fit in quite a few of the other powerful toys, including the all-important Dragon bus, giving you a live game into most foes (though I’d worry a bit about whether double Berzerker brick ends up blanking it). It worked out well here, taking down a strong field for the win, so congratulations to Colin.

Thunderkyn Forts
Thoughts
In undefeated second place, Codex “Put Sustained on Thunderkyn” puts Sustained on Thunderkyn, and it works out pretty well. This list can evaporate enemy heavy threats, and against lighter or more go-wide builds can lean on the difficulty of shifting multiple Fortresses and/or the powerful position control of the Steeljacks to get things done. The threat of Vengeance Flare also makes life very high risk for any crunchier foes planning to try and shift the Infantry at range, as a strike back from a Land Fortress risks killing an enemy tank outright. Finally, all the Transports mean that this army presents a fairly crunchy initial target profile, and it can stay fairly crunchy if only the Steeljacks get out, meaning that foes may find their small arms pretty useless. Lots to like here, and glad to see two different solid Votann builds getting airtime between this and Needgaard. Great work Guy.

Hi my name is Chris, this is my first local GT here in Somerset having recently moved from Scotland, I come bearing gifts … Noooo it’s not the plague it’s SHREK Written By William Steig & Ted Elliott – SHREK – Once upon a time there was a lovely princess. But she had an enchantment upon her of a fearful sort which could only be broken by love’s first kiss. She was locked away in a castle guarded by a terrible fire-breathing dragon. Many brave knights had attempted to free her from this dreadful prison, but non prevailed. She waited in the dragon’s keep in the highest room of the tallest tower for her true love and true love’s first kiss. (laughs) Like that’s ever gonna happen. What a load of – (toilet flush). Vectorium Goodstuff
Thoughts
The continued shift to Vectorium as the post-Dataslate Death Guard option is on show here, cheerfully absorbing about 200pts of point increases and still trucking. The dual reasons for that are that Vectorium provides some really great options that either didn’t go up (the Daemon Prince) or didn’t go up that much in relative terms (Plague Marines with Characters), and secondly that the “bait” nature of their Detachment Rule helps you get more value out of your fewer units. If you can start the game by stickying every mid-board objective with Poxwalkers, the your opponent kind of has to come and deal with them, at which point your three Bloat-drones will make them wish they hadn’t. I think this is my “favourite” (heavy air quotes there) Death Guard build I’ve seen post point changes, doing the best job of keeping everything that made the faction strong still active, and if you want to win with them, copy Chris’s build. Congratulations Chris.

All-rounder Inheritors
Thoughts
A build that manages a weird version of unique here – you could literally run this model for model as Liberator and it would be totally unsurprising, but as Inheritors it’s a little out there. It ends up sacrificing some of the raw proactive power of Liberator in favour of better performance against a foe that wants to attack into it, as the army is less dependant on being on the front foot, and can adapt to situations via a redeploy. Access to 18″ Lone Operative and the Ordained Sacrifice also gives you some angles to bait foes into the kind of confrontation you want. I do basically think that playing this detachment without at least one Infantry shooting unit to take advantage of Shadow is leaving value on the table, but I do think it’s cute that reskinning another Detachment’s list works so well. Good job Jordan.

Mawloc Assault
Thoughts
Some Tyranids to round us out, going for an extra shooty version of Subterranean Assault that takes a second squad of Zoanthropes in case the first one has some sort of accident. To pay for that, it goes a bit lighter on monsters than normal, using good value Mawlocs instead. A little jumpy about there only being one unit of Raveners, as a bit of redundancy there would also be valuable, but stacking extra firepower does let this build go for a big ranged alpha strike if enemies mess up. It’s also fun to see Mawlocs get work – I’ve been continually a bit surprised not to see at least one in Assault, as the threat they present is very scary to armies like Aeldari, so it’s somewhat relieving to see them in play. Well done Lukas.
