Just like last year, we’re going to break from our normal all-singles coverage to take a look at the top team compositions from the event. We know what’s good in the normal metagame right now, but how do you assemble that into an eight-player team to achieve world domination? Let’s have a look.

Analysis

Lowest of Men: France make back to back WTC wins seem easy, and that is no easy feat! This comp eschews Knights in favour of more melee brawling and horde lists- the Berzerker Horde World Eaters list is very potent into squishy Knight hunting armies like Eldar or GSC, and Space Wolves are ready to go and scrap with anything. The Recon Guard is quite a specialised horde, capable of drowning certain armies in high OC bodies.

In design, this comp leaves opposing Knights (and those more specialised armies that hunt them) with a lot of match ups they don’t want, and aims to take advantage of the ‘current’ teams meta by being a step ahead. There is plenty of melee pressure, and their own decision to pivot to Virulent Death Guard (perhaps the best anti-pressure variant of Death Guard at present), highlights their ‘next-step’ thinking.

Wings: Yeah, so the lack of Knights is obviously the elephant in the room here, the (correct) assumption being that every team under the sun would be bringing multiple answers for them. Here the Votann and Fire Dragon/Hawk Aeldari builds are great examples of that, and the anti-Knight Aeldari list was pretty much as staple of top compositions, but can struggle to perform when it doesn’t have any great targets.

Taking Knights out of your team isn’t without cost though, because while they can be countered, they’re also a very strong source of the big wins that get you over the lines in close matchups. I suspect that’s why there’s such a skew towards pressure and horde-style play in the rest of the composition here (especially Guard, CSM and World Eaters). These lists can also just steamroll the opposition on Primary and rack up massive wins, and some (like the Recon build) play a great Defender game too. It’s notable that there’s a real team level push towards giving your opponent tough Infantry blocks to deal with, as even the Wolves build spices up the normal recipe with a big Blood Claw unit that can roll an unprepared foe.

The one list here that I’m not quite sure of the role of is the Necrons build – my assumption on a read is that it’s a somewhat esoteric style of Defender list, designed to play dense boards and keep pace on scoring with small trading units and reviving Characters. From a look at the lists France put it up against, it’s clearly got some sauce against Mortarion’s Hammer (which fair, Wraiths are definitely great there), playing into it several times and repeatedly taking small wins, and also doing a good job of countering some elite melee builds via trading up, so it’s clear that France found the right tool to cover a couple of little niches there. All in all, it’s quite refreshing that the composition here isn’t just “the best singles lists”, it’s distinctly its own thing, and I’m glad that worked out so well for France!

Analysis

Wings: This is much more “the best singles builds and some counters for them”, though there’s a few places where an interesting reach into the B tier helps fill out the composition. The double Talos Drukhari are especially interesting, presumably designed as a Knight counter that doesn’t fold as hard to elite Infantry being rammed down their throats as some shooty builds do, and they also play a very strong trade game on any sort of heavy terrain.

Also interesting to see is the tilt towards builds with a higher 20-0 potential in some factions – I’m not certain if Stormlance Wolves is the “best” Marine army in the metagame, but I could certainly be convinced it’s up there for potential to completely rout an opponent (where even the nastiest Guilliman builds allow a bit of keep away). The ultra board control Daemons build with extra hammers is similar – this pivots very nicely from a cagey game to going all in as the situation demands. That feels like it sums up the strategy here – three top singles builds, and the rest are lists either counter them, or play a dual role to try and maximise the chance of landing enough favourable matchups for the big beasts to carry them over the line.

Mostly this worked well, with some very big wins, but a draw against Belgium and a narrow loss to the USA kept them off the top. Against the US, it looks like two of the three big hitters got taken out in rough matchups (though a 20-0 for the Chaos Knights nearly salvaged that), then the Drukhari ended up paired into a Genestealer horde they couldn’t handle, which is definitely that build’s big weakness. Still, very strong work from Germany in second here.

Lowest of Men: The Germans brought a comp more in line with what we saw across the event, with both flavours of Knights, then adequate levels of Knight counters and a few prey lists. The IK and CK lists both wreak havoc when they can pick boards, and whatever you think your counters may be, it can still be a knife edge game – we saw many armies step up, take a swing and lose to the meta hotness regardless across the event.

Germany have built some solid counters in, with Drukhari, Aeldari and Shadow Legion all capable of taking the Knights on alongside the Space Wolves. They stick with Mortarion’s Hammer Death Guard as another shooting list but I really like the inclusion of Helbrutes to add a bit more Vehicle skew and combat counter punch. The Shadow Legion list also loves hunting down squishier Knight counter armies in the lower end of pairings – my GSC came out the wrong end of that game in our round against them and it highlights the power of a well thought out include that can play both the meta predators and some of their counters too. A well balanced comp that required careful pairing to maximise, the Germans leveraged this to perfection, very well done!
