In a new feature for Goonhammer’s Kings of War coverage, I’m reviewing the top 20 lists from Clash of Kings 2024, the largest Kings of War event ever (so far!).
Players took 2300 point lists, which is the standard size for the game in the UK. The optional Withdraw rule wasn’t in use, and Allies weren’t permitted.
Because Kings of War event rankings work a little differently (being based on a points score system rather than win/loss), I’ve arbitrarily chosen to look at the top 20 lists instead of a fixed win/loss-based cut-off.
All of the lists for the event can be found in Dropbox (credit to the Kings of War Masters Committee for providing these).

In a metagame where fast lists and guns are prominent, it’s interesting to see a final table matchup where neither list falls into those categories. Ulysse is bringing a solidly stodgy group of hard hitting pieces, with Enslaved Guardians and a Horde of Revenants making up the crunchy core of this list. But, he’s brought plenty of fast chaff to tie things up, as well as some speedy hard hitters in the form of a Bone Giant and Undead Wyrm. Of note are the inclusion of Arkhanten, who I personally haven’t seen a great deal of, and absence of the Idol of Shobik, a usually common piece capable of grinding out combats solo with its excellent stats. This list had clearly served Ulysse well moving into this final round, as he entered on four wins and one draw.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s list is, if anything, even slower (with exceptions), but packs a mean punch at range to make up for it. Boasting a solid shot count, some very zoomy and tanky Dwarf Lords, and a pair of Steel Behemoths, the amount of extremely high Def here presents a formidable problem for lists not able to crack it. The Ironclad are perfectly capable of trading up against the unwary, thanks to the option of massed Throwing Mastiffs that they’ll more than likely get to deliver, and are cheap enough that their numbers form a reliable core opponents could and did break upon. Daniel had managed a blistering performance of five wins on his way to the final round. Honestly, looking at this before the round, it’d be too close to call for me, with such a grindy matchup being very dependent on play execution after five tiring rounds.
Result – Dwarf Victory, 3-2

Thoughts
A very balanced list, with options to punch, shoot, zoom, and trudge as needed. An extremely tough core presents few options for gunlines to take easy pickings early, and when the Dwarfs make it into melee, they absolutely have the upper hand in most grind games. Daniel performed phenomenally despite not playing at a single other event this year – congratulations to him on the win!

Thoughts
Florence has been gunning (no pun intended) for podiums for a while now, and has made a well-earned breakthrough here. 80 shots downrange with no penalties from movement means you’re getting peppered the whole way, and, while the melee hammers are a teensy bit limper for the cost than you’d get elsewhere, that doesn’t matter when you’ve been nickel and dimed by the shooting. We’re seeing these three Elven Kings often, as hilariously the Axe of the Giant Slayer and Scythe of the Harvester add to their respectable 7 Bow shots each – they fit really well as sources of Inspiring that do work at every point in the game.

Thoughts
Continuing his ‘play every faction’ approach to this season, Chris brings a fearsome flying gunline. A mighty glacier of Ice Elementals rumbling up the table presents a battleline for the Frostclaw Riders to operate around, and once again we see a list that puts out a ludicrous amount of shooting – albeit truly coming into its own at a shorter range. Every non-character unit here is almost a jack-of-all-trades, making the list very versatile in matchups where one aspect or another might struggle, and it’s no surprise to see this do well in the hands of a very skilled pilot.

Thoughts
This list knows exactly what it wants to do, and it’s to press any button it sees that says Revenant on it. Accordingly, Antonio’s doubled up on Undead Army Standard Bearers, meaning that Aura (Wild Charge 2) is hitting as many Skeletons as possible. This list therefore presents a very fast melee hammerfest with all the tricks usually associated with Surge, and almost zero trivial targets for shooting. Of note is the Liche King with Alchemist’s Curse and Boots of Levitation, a common tech piece at the event which made good sense in a field full of Def5 and Def6.

Thoughts
In the spirit of knowing exactly which button you want to press, Jorge brings more boats than some navies, backing them up with an interestingly kitted-out Summoner Crone/La’theal package, Phantoms to screen, and Fleetwardens to be randomly hard to kill for their points. I’m surprised not to see at least one Void Captain here, to spread Rallying around, and equally surprised by the presence of a Twilight Assassin – which I’ve literally never seen hit the table, so great that it’s shown up here – with the Gnome-Glass Shield to absolutely boatmurder enemy Individuals and spread Dread around. An interesting spin on a prominent archetype.

Thoughts
It’s not quite the Basilean Greatest Hits collection, as the Panther Chariot Hordes are a rare touch in my experience, but there are certainly a lot of the classics here. Triple Phoenix is always a pain, as they’re one of the most versatile units in the game – the only thing they can’t do is shift things in melee, and pretty much the whole rest of this list does that with aplomb. Gur Panthers are among the fastest of fast chaff, so are firmly on ‘force ideal charges for stuff’ duty, and the hammers here are hitting hard enough to one-tap a lot of things even on a front charge. A very speedy and threatening list overall.

Thoughts
Genuinely not a faction I expected to see do particularly well this weekend, given the initial response to their rerelease, so it’s great to see Arthur pilot them to prominence. Instead of the Riverguard-focused builds popularised early on, we’re instead looking at a lot of Naiads. The gun/hitty mix here is pretty even, with the shot count being more combined arms than gunline. I’ll shout out the two cool Individuals – the Naiad Centurion with Trident of the Drowned Sea is a great disruption peace, with Slayer(D3) from Axe of the Giant Slayer to get damage through, and Eckter is possibly the hardest to kill Individual in the game.

I don’t have much to say about this that I didn’t say in the Showdown notes above, honestly. Instead, I’m going to pick up on something I hadn’t noticed at first, which is the Trickster’s Wand on the Revenant Champion – I adore seeing this item on Ht3 models, as it’s genuinely matchup-defining in games where spellcasters are prominent (such as, ironically, the mirror match). Ht3 makes it difficult to block lines of sight to the target, and in early turns where Surge isn’t as necessary it’s great to just throw off some disruption.

A less shooty, more choppy version of the standard Basilean list. Of note are the concentration of hitting power in a few small units, the choice to run Paladin Foot Guard as the screen, and Hordes of Men-at-Arms Spearmen and Ogre Palace Guard to form a sturdy bulwark. But, at the end of the day, this is still Basileans, so there’s still a Phoenix and a bunch of Sp10 melee threats that fly and make you cry.

Thoughts
My best enemy of the weekend rounds out our long-form summaries. Rather than picking one thing to concentrate on, Exequiel’s went for a pick-and-mix approach, basically just taking a whole bunch of good units that do scary things. Once again, the Liche King with Alchemist’s Curse makes an appearance, and it seems fair to say this tech piece worked out well for the Spanish-speaking contingent overall at the weekend. Other than that, Soul Reaver Cavalry rather than oops all Revenant Cavalry is interesting, and I’m curious how they played out on the table in the other games.
The Best of the Rest
There were ten more players with a finish I feel warrants looking at. They were:
11th – Radoslaw Brylowski – Halflings: Halfling Flying Circus combined arms, with a random Talisman of Silence Sergeant.
12th – Thomas – Northern Alliance: A spin on classic Northern Alliance combined arms, including a cheeky Orlaf the Barbarian.
13th – Piotr Darkowski – Empire of Dust: Grindy Empire of Dust melee with no Monolith and two Hordes of Revenants.
14th – Mario Murillo Raja – Ogres: Siege Breakers and Ogres with guns and spells, as is tradition.
15th – Simon Brand – Ratkin: A big pile of disposable bitey bodies, with buffed Tunnel Runners to close the deal.
16th – Jørgen Aarø – Undead: A mix of melee units, with Wights as the main hitter, and an unexpected Lykanis.
17th – Nicolas Felix – Order of the Brothermark: Featuring the first Infantry Legion we’ve seen so far in the top spots. Nothing too fast, but nothing that dies easy.
18th – Javier Ancizu Vergara – Ogres: Siege Breakers and Ogres with guns and spells, as is tradition, but with Kuzlo and Madfall for spice.
19th – Paul Burke – Ogres: Siege Breakers and Ogres with guns and spells, but continuing the tradition of doing One Interesting Thing, this one has an upgraded Mammoth.
20th – Mario Pinós Quejido – Elves: Like Basilean Zoomers with pointy ears. Alchemist’s Curse makes another appearance, accompanied by fast melee and guns.
