Competitive Innovations in the Mortal Realms: Brews and Shrooms

We’re now a week into February with still no Battlescroll. I know, you’re all disappointed, but that doesn’t mean events have stopped! We got an interesting two events this week, the famous Brewhammer in Columbus Ohio. Much, much further away in the Philippines we’re featuring the Wartilyo GT.

Columbus Brewhammer ’24

Thoughts

Like most games involving Beastclaw Raiders, the mission is largely going to come down to how the first round goes. If the Beastclaw Raiders player can massacre the majority of the opponent’s army, they can usually scoop up enough points to win the rest of it, if they don’t it’s going to be over pretty quickly.

Unfortunately, the Seraphon list here has some pretty beefy screens, 2x units of 20 Saurus Warriors and 5 Saurus Guard may not be fast but itll certainly slow most things down while pelting them with comets. It ends in a pretty decisive Seraphon Victory.

Archetype

Double Slann with lots of caked up Saurus Warriors.

Thoughts

This is the Starborne lists distilled to its essence, Kroak and another Slann hang back and cast all the mortal wounds they can, supported by Saurus Guard and a Astrolith Bearer to help keep them nice and healthy from any attacks getting through. The Starseer can shut off Wards for enemies that may pose a problem for that (Death, Nurgle, etc.), while Cosmic Crush does drop some mortal wounds that scale well to large units.

The lack of Cavalry does set this list apart from similar other lists, two 20 man Saurus Warriors does make for a much slower list, but with a free teleport each round, they can mostly get where they need to be and are resiliant enough to handle most hammers trying to knock them off.

Thoughts

This is a tough mission for Slaves to Darkness, as it requires high mobility to keep up with the pulse. Alexis’ list is better suited to it than most, with a big unit of Chaos Knight and two squads of Corvus Cabal, that’s a lot more mobility than usual for the army.

That said, few can match a squig spam list in mobility, even if its unreliable, they’re gonna be bouncing all over the place and tapping those chosen for Mortal Wounds before they can get set up. The battle ends in a pretty decisive victory for the Gitz.

Gloomspite Gitz Victory – 28 – 10

Nico Cavada – Gloomspite Gitz – 1st Place

Archetype

Squig Hordes

Thoughts

It’s squigs! Pretty much everything here exists to augment the squigs. Loonboss gives out +1 to wound, Squigboss hands out a couple of combat buffs and Gobbapalooza can help them run and charge, +1 to hit and wound or -1 rend. Grinkrak grants fight on death, which is huge for the frankly suicidal squigs that make up most of the list.

Otherwise the goal is just get into the enemy’s line and nail them before they can nail you, like some tiny beastclaw raiders, and damned if it’s not effective.

The Best of the Rest

There were 4 more players on 4-1 records. They were:

  • 2nd – Angelo Basa Mogul – Seraphon (Koatl’s Claw): Kroak leads Saurus hordes.
  • 3rd – Dennis David – Ossiarch Bonereapers (Mortis Praetorians): Double Mortarchs lead elite OBR troops.
  • 4th – Alexis Sulit – Slaves to Darkness (Cabalists): See Showdown.
  • 5th – BJ Recio – Ossiarch Bonereapers (Crematorians): Surprise list of Nagash with 30 Mortek Guard and some Kavalos Deathriders.

Wrap Up

Another interesting week of Sigmar. With the surprising diversity in lists, it feels difficult to pin down which factions are “winning” all the time, but events are downsizing a bit until we get to the Cherokee Open. With the Battlescroll on the horizon, things are bound to shake up again in short order, and we’ll be there to talk about it. See you next week!
