Goonhammer Reviews: Kharadron Overlords Vongrim Harpooners, Null-Khemist, and Zontari Endrin Dock

A thank you to Games Workshop for providing early review copies of the following Kharadron Overlord kits. We also have a battletome review out for the new book so go have a look at that too.

Finally finally we have a second wave of Kharadron Overlords. A new hero, a new multi-part, dual-kit, unit, and even a terrain piece. I really didn’t think they’d ever actually make a Kharadron terrain piece but here we are. This is my second go at Kharadron Overlords and I’ve gone for a simple take of Barak Zon’s scheme. A nice red that’s a bit darker than it “should” be with Pro Acryl’s Burnt Red and the best blue I’ve used to date, Pro Acryl Ultramarine.

Null-Khemist

The new hero on the block is the Null-Khemist which in-game focuses around being better at killing wizards, priests, and manifestations. As a kit it’s incredibly straight forwards with zero options whatsoever other than you can angle the wings on the back of the aether Endrins a bit. It’s a solid hero kit all in all and I am very pleased that they’ve moved away from flight stands; those hateful, easily breakable, clear things. The angle that’s been advertised for this guy so far doesn’t show what he’s bouncing off of super well but it’s a Kharadron ship’s rudder.

I did forget to take a photo of the sprue, oops, but you can have a look at that on the Warhammer dot com website I’m sure when this goes live.

Vongrim Harpooners

I received one box set of the new Vongrim units which meant making a very, very, difficult decision: Harpooners or Salvagers? I went towards the “cooler” unit in my opinion with the Harpooners. Again, very, very, pleased that Games Workshop is moving further away from the hell that is clear flight stands.

And the sprue after building Harpooners:

Genuinely I just love this kit. That’s a lot of used up plastic with a bunch of options between the two kits leftover but most importantly? Loads of spare heads. I didn’t build the “right” head on any of these, I wanted the flowing female head on the unit leader with trident and just made sure that hair was flowing in the right direction on all the others. I’m not a fan of the skull caps necessarily but will be trying them on Thunderers or Arkanauts as I get to them later this week, unfortunately I didn’t have any unbuilt to hand to see how they fit just yet.

This is what Kharadron Overlords should look like and I’m even a little upset I’ll have to put these next to the older, slightly smaller, Skywardens and Endrinriggers. It’s a little awkward to photograph these models because they certainly look much better in person in a three-dimensional space.

Overall the kit just goes together really well. The only thing to look out for is that my box arrived with a harpoon thread snapped, a bit of plastic glue sorted it out and you’d have no idea but it’s a bit disappointing with a brand new kit, those ropes are certainly a bit thin. That said, this was the only issue I faced putting them together. Also, and this is crucial, the bird that goes on the champion’s aether endrin has two different heads to choose from. Now that’s a good kit.

The only concern I do have is that the poses are pretty stuck as-is so if you’re wanting to do a whole army of these (and that would be incredibly cool, and probably even good in-game) then you’re going to be doing a bit of work if you want each model to look unique. I’ve used some different arms on some models that weren’t “right” as per the instructions and they’re certainly interchangeable but on the harpoons themselves that’ll be more difficult to rig given they attach at a few places each.

Zontari Endrin Dock

Terrain! For duardin privateers with flying ships! I never thought I’d see the day. It’s a single sprue to build all of them and the only complaint across it is that one of the smaller pieces is incredibly awkward to put together with four very tiny contact points of the smoke lifting it up. That’s pretty good going as far as I’m concerned for hit rate of hard-to-build.

It’s not so large that it’ll be awkward to transport around, either. I’ll get these painted up sometime soon I’m sure but the Vongrim unit took a bit longer than I expected. The Null-Khemist, for size comparison reasons, is about the same size as the Endrinmaster with Dirigible Suit and on a 40mm base.

All is Fair in Love and Aether Engines

I’ll certainly be picking up at lest three more Vongrim kits during pre-order. It’s a fantastic kit and I’m very keen to have ten of each type of model.

None of these kits feel weirdly over-engineered in a way that I’ve found some other more modern Games Workshop kits. The Vongrim’s certainly offer some additional optional bits if you’re into that sort of thing for more details but I am not and kept them off. The dock has some additional optional mugs and an oil can too which I’m sure I’ll make good use of on Skyvessels in due course.

At this point I just really want some re-done Arkanaut and Skywarden kits now to match a bit better with these new models. They’ll look fine alongside these on the tabletop but these are just much better in my view.
