Games Workshop was kind enough to provide us with these models for review.
Fowler asked me to get this guy together, so off we go. I’ve never had the pleasure of working with any of the Lord of the Rings range. And Bolg stands taller than I was expecting.Â

Packaged in a character size box, and fully contained on one sprue, you get both the foot and mounted versions of Bolg, Spawn of Azog.

Due to time constraints, I only got the foot version together and painted. Modern GW kits are pretty consistently easy to work with, but I always seem to find one or two weird bits. In this case, it’s the knee connections, and yea, Bolg himself is in 13 parts. This is GW fully cutting up the kit in very weird ways to get a ton of undercuts, which leads to no weird casting areas. Impressive really, but it does mean that one of the parts is his neck and pecks and one leg is in 4 parts. Whatever, it goes together without too much drama and gives you a nice, dynamic character model.
Painting

I referenced the WarCom images as much as I could and put my own spin on the paintwork. I have a go-to style that is very efficient, so with tight timelines, I try not to experiment too much. Helpfully, there aren’t too many different materials on Bolg.
Over my usual basecoat of Army Painter sprays, Leather Brown and Skeleton Bone spray, I finish the basecoat with a drybrush of white.

Skin first, just a coat of Gulliman Flesh with a drybrush of of pale fleshtone I mixed up. I glazed the inside of his mouth with Blood Angels Red. Leather and fur was done with Garaghak’s Sewer and drybrushed with Ushabti Bone. Metal was Plate Metal with a wash of Nuln Oil and then a second wash of 4:1 Nuln Oil and Garaghak’s Sewer. I did a little edge chipping on the metal to bring it back up. The skull in his belt and the bear claws were based with Suhati Bone, glazed with Skeleton horde and then highlighted up to white. The bow was glazed with Snakebite Leather and the fletching on the arrows with Black Templar.
Basing is Steel Legion Drab, washed with Nuln and highlighted with Ushabti Bone. A tiny bit of Woodland Scenics flock and he’s all set!
Overall, pretty neat. This isn’t my jam, but it’ll go live in a display cabinet and look pretty good.
