For today’s How to Paint Everything: Marvel Crisis Protocol, I’ll be going over how I painted Doctor Voodoo from the Midnight Sons Affiliation Pack!
I was introduced to Doctor Voodoo during the New Avengers / Mighty Avengers era by Brian Michael Bendis, when Doctor Strange was no longer worthy of being Sorcerer Supreme. In that storyline, Doctor Strange must find a replacement and Brother Voodoo is deemed his successor, after which he takes on the moniker Doctor Voodoo. I’ve always meant to go back and read up a bit more of Doctor Voodoo’s history, but I’ve not gotten a chance to.
Doctor Voodoo floats above his base, suspended on a waft of spirit laced smoke or energy, an effect we will be painting with fluorescent colors to create some pop. He sports a predominantly black costume, which we will infuse with a bit of color to keep it from being pure black. I’ll also be going over how I painted his skintones, using browns, red and purple to make it lively.
So let’s get to it! Below you’ll find a handy paint chart featuring all of the colors used on this miniature.

Skin
Basecoat – Citadel Mournfang Brown
Shadows – Citadel Mournfang Brown: Citadel Xerxes Purple
Warm Tones – Citadel Mournfang Brown: Wazdakka Red
Layer – Citadel Mournfang Brown
Highlight – Citadel Mournfang Brown: Citadel Bugman’s Glow
Highlight – Citadel Bugman’s Glow
Dark Lining – Citadel Rhinox Hide
To start, we will give the skin a basecoat of Mournfang Brown. I then mixed Xerxes Purple in and painted that in all of the shadows and the lower half of the face. On his forehead, nose, and cheeks, I painted a mix of Mournfang Brown and Wazdakka Red. I then went in with a thin layer of Mournfang Brown to help tie things together. From there, I mixed Bugman’s Glow with Mournfang Brown to begin highlighting, followed by a final highlight of Bugman’s Glow. To help add some definition, I used Rhinox hide in some recesses as well.
Hair
White Basecoat – AK Interactive Pastel Violet
Highlight – AK Interactive Ivory
Highlight – AK Interactive White
Black Basecoat – Citadel Rhinox Hide: Vallejo Model Color Black
Highlight – Previous Mix: Citadel Mournfang Brown
Highlight – Previous Mix: Citadel XV-88
Doctor Voodoo has a skunk stripe of white hair in his dreadlocks. My new favorite trick for white is to start with a basecoat of Pastel Violet. I then highlighted the hair with Ivory, with is an off white and then White.
His black hair was painted with a mix of Rhinox Hide and Black. I then mixed Mournfang Brown into the previous mix and highlighted it, this was followed by another highlight with XV-88 mixed in as well.
Black Suit
Basecoat – Vallejo Model Color Black Grey
Layer – Vallejo Model Color Black Grey: AK Interactive French Blue
Layer – Previous Mix: AK Interactive French Blue
Layer – AK Interactive French Blue
The black sections of his suit were painted with a basecoat of Black Grey, because I didn’t want to get too close to true black. I then mixed French Blue into Black Grey for the first layer. I mixed in extra French Blue for the second layer and finally finished it off with straight French Blue.
White Suit Accents
Basecoat – AK Interactive Pastel Violet
Shadows – AK Interactive Pastel Violet: AK Interactive Dark Sea Blue
Clean Up – AK Interactive Pastel Violet
Layer – AK Interactive Pastel Violet: AK Interactive Ivory
Layer – AK Interactive Ivory
Highlight – AK Interactive White
As I mentioned in the hair section, my new secret weapon for painting white is Pastel Violet. But also, I mix in a tiny, tiny, tiny amount of Dark Sea Blue in for the shadows.
So for the white areas of the suit, I started with Pastel Violet, I then painted all of the shaded and recessed areas with my mix of Pastel Violet and Dark Sea Blue. From there, using Pastel Violet again, I did a little bit of clean up. I then mixed in Ivory to Pastel Violet for the first layer, followed by pure Ivory. Finally I highlighted everything with White.
Green Sashes
Basecoat – Army Painter Emerald Forest: Citadel Mephiston Red
Layer – Previous Mix: Army Painter Emerald Forest
Highlight – Army Painter Emerald Forest
The green sashes were given a basecoat of Emerald Forest mixed with Mephiston Red. Normally I wouldn’t do the base coat with a mix like this, but the areas are small enough that it made more sense to me to start with it this time. I then mixed in more Emerald Forest to catch the high points of the fabric and finally highlighted them with straight Emerald Forest.
Cape
Basecoat – Citadel Mephiston Red
Shadows – Citadel Mephiston Red: Army Painter Emerald Forest
Layer – Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet
Highlight -Citadel Wild Rider Red
I am a big fan of painting red capes, I don’t know what it is, but I’ve always had a much better time painting capes red, than I have any other color.
We will start with a smooth coat of Mephiston Red, making sure I have nice and even coverage as well. I then mixed Mephiston Red and Emerald Forest and painted that on the underside of the cape and in the recesses of the folds. After a bit of clean up with Mephiston Red, I laid down a layer of Evil Sunz Scarlet and finally a highlight of Wild Rider Red.
Gold
Basecoat – AK Interactive Sahara Yellow
Shadows – AK Interactive Sahara Yellow: AK Interactive Purple
Highlight – AK Interactive Sand Yellow
Highlight – AK Interactive Ice Yellow
Highlight – AK Interactive White
Dark Lining – AK Interactive Hull Red
Currently my go to paints for non-metallic metal style gold are AK Interactive’s NMM Gold paint set. I start with a basecoat of Sahara Yellow. I then paint in the shadows using a mix of Purple and Sahara Yellow. From there I start highlighting, beginning with Sand Yellow, followed by Ice Yellow and finally White. To finish it off, I paint Hull Red into the recesses to help push contrast more and break up the yellow a bit.
Staff
Basecoat – Citadel XV-88
Layer – Citadel XV-88: Citadel Ushabti Bone
Highlight – Previous Mix: AK Interactive White
I went super easy while painting his staff. I started with a basecoat of XV-88, followed by a layer of XV-88 mixed with Ushabti Bone and finally a highlight using the previous mix and a bit of White added in.
Spirit Effect
Basecoat – Army Painter Rainforest
Basecoat 2 – Army Painter Rainforest: Lethal Shadows Fluorescent Green
Layer – Previous Mix: Lethal Shadows Fluorescent Yellow
Layer – Phalanx Yellow: Lethal Shadows Fluorescent Yellow
Highlight – Lethal Shadows Fluorescent Yellow
Highlight – Vallejo Model Color White
Previously, I’d painted a different Doctor Voodoo with a purple and orange spirit effect. This time I decided to paint it green, since most of my ghostly effects are bright green too. To start I painted all of it Rainforest green, to get a nice even green color on the entire thing. I then mixed in Fluorescent Green and painted the entire effect with that as well. This was followed by layering, the first layer was painted with the previous mix with Fluorescent Yellow mixed in, followed by another layer of Fluorescent Yellow mixed with Phalanx Yellow. Finally, I highlighted it with straight Fluorescent Yellow and another highlight of White.
Skulls
Basecoat – Citadel Karak Stone
Layer – Citadel Morghast Bone
Layer – Citadel Ushabti Bone
Highlight – Citadel Ushabti Bone: AK Interactive White
Another easy paint job were the skulls. These started with a basecoat of Karak Stone. From there it was just a couple easy layers of Morghast Bone and Ushabti Bone. They were finished off with a highlight of Ushabti Bone mixed with White.
Base
Concrete Basecoat – Citadel Stormvermin Fur
Stipple – Citadel Administartum Grey
Stipple – Citadel Ulthuan Grey
Wash – Citadel Nuln Oil
Rusty Metal Basecoat – Citadel Mechanicus Standard Grey
Layer – Citadel Mournfang Brown
Drybrush – Citadel Fire Dragon Bright
Wash – Citadel Agrax Earthshade
It’s pretty standard fare here. His base was painted the same way I paint all of my MCP bases. It starts with a basecoat of Stormvermin Fur on all of the concrete surfaces and a basecoat of Mechanicus Standard Grey on all of the metal surfaces. I then stipple the concrete areas with Administratum Grey and Ulthuan Grey. The metal areas are given a layer of very thinned down Mournfang Brown and a drybrush of Fire Dragon Bright. The concrete areas are given a wash of Nuln Oil, while the metal areas are given a wash of Agrax Earthshade.

That’ll do it for Doctor Voodoo! He’s ready to harass opponents and send his brother Daniel to do some dirty work. This is actually the second time I’ve painted him, and I had a lot better time working on him this time around.
