How to Paint Everything: Marvel Crisis Protocol – Moon Knight

The Avatar of Khonshu, Moon Knight, is the focus of today’s How to Paint Everything: Marvel Crisis Protocol. This time we’re going to try to make painting white a bit more interesting and inject a bit of color into it, for this we will start with a base coat of Pastel Violet and then highlight up to White. I’m really happy with the results and it makes the white much more lively.

Below you’ll find a handy paint chart of all of the colors used on Moon Knight. Let’s get into it.

White Suit

Basecoat – AK Interactive Pastel Violet
Shadows – AK Interactive Pastel Violet: AK Interactive Dark Sea Blue
Clean Up – AK Interactive Pastel Violet
Layer – AK Interactive Pastel Violet: AK Interactive Ivory
Layer – AK Interactive Ivory
Highlight – AK Interactive White

As I mentioned earlier, all of the white was painted with a basecoat of Pastel Violet to give the white a bit more visual interest. The deep recesses and recess lines were painted with a mix of Deep Sea Blue and Pastel Violet. I played with mixes a bit in this step and went more blue the darker the shadow was, such as the interior of the cape. After doing a bit of clean up with Pastel Violet, I then mixed Pastel Violet with Ivory. This mix was used to start building up the white highlights, while keeping the violet tint. I then added another layer of Ivory on it’s own, and finished it all off with pure White.

Staff

Basecoat – Citadel Stormvermin Fur
Layer – AK Interactive Dark Sea Blue
Layer – AK Interactive French Blue
Layer – AK Interactive Snow Blue
Layer – AK Interactive White

I painted the staff with colors that I would normally use in my NMM Chrome recipe. I wanted it to seem like it was reflecting the white of Moon Knight’s costume, but also have some of the colors of the sky and ground. I started by painting the staff Stormvermin Fur and then added Deep Sea Blue on the surface facing the sky. From there I added a layer of French Blue and Snow Blue, trying to create the look of reflections.

The closer it got to the suit, the more of it became White highlights, until I got to the ground, and switched to Stormvermin Fur. In all honesty, it was a lot of playing around and I’m not really certain if I’m happy with the effect. But sometimes done is better than perfect and I had to move on.

Gold Bits

Basecoat – AK Interactive Sahara
Highlight – AK Interactive Sand Yellow
Highlight – AK Interactive White

The gold caps on his staff were painted in a super simple NMM Gold. I started with a basecoat of Sahara and then I highlighted them with Sand Yellow and White.

Base

Basecoat – Citadel Stormvermin Fur
Stipple – Citadel Administartum Grey
Stipple – Citadel Ulthuan Grey
Wash – Citadel Nuln Oil

His base is painted in my usual way. I start with a basecoat of Stormvermin Fur and then stipple the surface with Administartum Grey and Ulthuan Grey and I finish it off with a wash of Nuln Oil.
