Star Wars Shatterpoint: Delta Squad Box Review

Come on…admit it…did you also get super excited by this box and re-download Republic Commando? Because I certainly did!

Whether you know them from this hugely underrated video game, or from their appearances in The Clone Wars & Bad Batch TV shows – here they are to grace our tables in Atomic Mass Games’ Star Wars Shatterpoint!

Boss Character Card

“Designated RC-1138, Boss was the level-headed and battle-hardened leader of Delta Squad. With a commanding presence and a keen tactical mind, he kept his team focused under extreme pressure, ensuring every mission was executed with military precision. His ability to assess a battlefield and direct his squad accordingly made him an indispensable force on the front lines.” – Atomic Mass Games

First off, Delta Squad are encouraged to stick close together (as they should be, if you remember the game) thanks to Hang Tight Trooper, Delta Squad on Our Way. This makes for them to function with some real synergy as mobile attrition pieces.

Let’s Get in There and Start Breaking Things gives Boss an impressive and flexible amount of movement. For moments when a dash just isn’t enough, suffering 1 damage will feel like a good trade off to get him to where he needs to be.

That leads us nicely to You Need to Learn I’m a Lot Scarier Than You Are. Suffering damage for extra mobility will feel extra good when this ability allows you to benefit from more attack dice for it. This helps Boss maintain his main character vibes as he leads Delta Squad around the board.

His Wet Work stance is where Boss likes to get up close and personal. It boosts his melee offensiveness to impressive levels. This is the stance you want when you just need something in front of you to go away.

Rapid Fire serves as his ranged option. Seven dice is impressive, especially when you add in the extra dice granted in the mid-late game by You Need to Learn I’m a Lot Scarier Than You. Plus, continuing with the mobile attrition theme here, there are a fantastic amount of movement tricks down the tree which will certainly come in handy.

Fixer Character Card

“Analytical and no-nonsense, Fixer is the squad’s systems expert and tactical linchpin. He isn’t interested in flair. He’s here to get the job done right.” – Atomic Mass Games

Grab Yourself Some Bacta, Trooper will certainly ‘fix’ up some of the damage Boss causes himself for his movement mechanics; but it can also help keep other Clone Troopers in the fight.

Forming Up, Sir and String ‘Em Along and We’ll Mop ‘Em Up is even more incentive to keep Delta Squad close together on the table, which I love. This formation plus the use of Watch the Master at Work feels like you can leave one half of the objectives to Delta Squad and have faith that they will keep control of them.

The current thinking in the Shatterpoint community is that the way to take down Delta Squad is to focus on Fixer – which is all you need to know when gauging this model’s synergy with his squad-mates.

Fixer lives up to his name with his stance Tactical Supremacy. The flexibility of this tree means he has a good chance of giving you what you need when he attacks (with 7 dice on ranged by the way, which is great). Some extra damage, mobility and an Expose will help the rest of Delta Squad lay the smack down – or else you can get some extra healing for them.

Sev and Scorch Character Card

“Sev and Scorch are the squad’s hammer and anvil. One is a silent, relentless sniper. The other, a demolition expert with a flair for mayhem. Together, they form one of the most aggressive Supporting Units in Star Wars™: Shatterpoint, clocking in at 5 squad points with 8 stamina and 2 durability. A premium investment, but a potent one.” – Atomic Mass Games

Keeping up with the high movement based attrition, we have Point Me at the Enemy and Stay Out of My Way. This coupled with Yes! More Explosives! Makes Sev & Scorch’s ability to throw dice at a target much more reliable.

I Love My Job also helps reinforce the point made earlier about Delta Squad controlling a side by themselves. Once everything is dead (remember Rule 17), Sev & Scorch can be left behind to hold the fort.

Having a stance card with two completely separate trees like this is an odd one. I suspect this is to show the two very different personalities that make up this Unit. With 7 and 6 dice on their attacks, you have a nice selection of potential effects you can stack up here.

So overall, Delta Squad make for an extremely mobile and very reliable attrition squad.

Their addition to the game also now means you can run a full GAR squad if you pair these guys with Hunter & The Bad Batch – and that’s a lot of fun!
