Souls plucked from the edge of death and forged by lightning into a new form that can fight and die and reforge and fight and die and… well then it does start to go a bit wrong. Stormcast Eternals are Sigmar’s chosen elite, the armies that began the process of liberating the mortal realms from the clutches of chaos. Hurled as lightning bolts from Azyr to the battlefield, Stormcast have pretty unfairly picked up a bit of a reputation as a bland army; scratch the surface and they’re anything but.Â
Faction Overview
As the poster children of the entire game and appearing without fail in every edition’s starter set, the Stormcast Eternals have ended up with a deep pool of warscrolls to draw on. Even discounting the units that became Legends on 1st June 2025, Stormcast have access to 30 different hero warscrolls alone – more units than most factions get across their entire line. This is both a blessing and a curse, as it means the army has access to everything you could desire from a unit but there are predictably sweeping internal balance problems, and it can make assessing your options as a new player a bewildering experience.
For playstyle, Stormcast are perhaps surprisingly a jack of all trades, master of none deal. Kind of slow and kind of tough (though with a distinct weakness to mortal damage), they’re also not typically efficient enough to go blow for blow with dedicated melee armies. The real need to have a shooting element to remain competitive combined with the pushed units in that regard can give competitive Stormcast armies a samey feel – rarely in AoS history have they left the stormkeep without a unit of Longstrikes. But there are a few different build paths available, and there are enough other units of sufficient quality on offer, that the initial appearance can be deceiving.Â
