The Warhammer 40,000 universe is a massive place, and the “Narrative Forge” hobby articles encourage thinking outside the box (literally) when putting models together and stretching yourself out in the hobby. They aim to make hobbyists and players comfortable growing beyond imitating the models they see in their Codexes and playing the rulebook missions, and serve as a source of inspiration for anyone wanting to forge new experiences in the hobby. This week, Robert “TheChirurgeon” Jones is presenting a couple of missions based on a pivotal moment in the Warhammer 40k lore.
I love Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s Black Legion books. They’re my favorite books in the Black Library collection, presenting the Chaos Legions and Abaddon in a way that we haven’t seen before, and with characters who are fascinating to read about as they navigate the path from being mortal enemies to being… less mortal enemies who begrudgingly work together out of a shared sense of duty. The books are filled with great moments, and while none of them are as absolutely rude as “a Night Lord headbuts a Space Marine terminator to death to shut him up mid-speech,” they’ve still great to read about.
In this week’s Narrative Forge, we’re presenting a new set of GOONHAMMER APPROVED missions, this time representing two pivotal battles from the book Black Legion.
CAUTION: BLACK LEGION SPOILERS TO FOLLOW (ABADDON LIVES, SIGISMUND EATS IT)
As the Vengeful Spirit emerged from the Eye of Terror for the first time since the end of the Horus Heresy along with the remains of the Black Legion fleet, they found themselves between a rock and a hard place. The Rock being Thagus Daravek’s fleet, hot on their tails and eager to kill Abaddon and his sorcerer Khayon the Black and cement Daravek’s ascension as warmaster, and the Hard Place being Sigismund’s Black Templars aboard the Eternal Crusader.
As Abaddon took his strongest warriors with him to launch an attack on the Eternal Crusader, Khayon was forced to face Daravek as the Death Guard Chaos Lord hunted him down on the Vengeful Spirit.
To represent these battles, we’ve put together a pair of Zone Mortalis missions, which you can find in the links below. They come with a set of custom datasheets representing the four characters locked in mortal combat.
To Play These Missions, You Will Need:
- Codex Chaos Space Marines
- Codex Death Guard
- Codex Thousand Sons (optional)
- Psychic Awakening: Faith and Fury
- Codex Space Marines
- Goonhammer’s Custom Zone Mortalis rules and missions
Also, you’re gonna need the rules for these missions! You can find those here:
Now’s your chance to play it out or dramatically reverse the course of history in the 40k universe!
