Last Weekend’s Event

Another GT heavy week for the UTC. For the Red Dragon GT, Warzone: Dice Goblin, Warpstone Wars AoS GT, and Twisted Aquila GT check out this week’s Competitive Innovations.

The Grim Dark Rumpus – Mud Season 40K RTT

(Rutland, VT)

First up is a 40k RTT out of Vermont. James Howard won the event with their Death Guard, beating Tyranids in the final round. The list is a pretty standard Death Guard spread; Morty, PBCs, Plague Marines in Rhinos, etc. the special sauce seems to be a full brick of deathshroud headed up by Typhus providing a really durable unit that is frustrating to remove.

  • James Howard – Death Guard
  • Brian Moll – Orks
  • Dean Gianotti- Tyranids

Asgard April RTT

(Houston, TX)

Our next event is another 40k RTT, this time out of Texas. Connor Tomalty’s Votann took the event beating out Death Guard in the final round. Its been a while since I’ve written about Votann though this list is very familiar to me, lots of Saggitaurs, Pioneers, and Hearthguard. Nice to see the dwarves can still hang

  • Connor Tomalty (Sanctum) – Leagues of Votann
  • Steven Salazar (Sanctum) – T’au Empire
  • Oscar Ruiz (Forge Masters) – Death Guard

Triple Cities GT @ Dragon Master Games

(Houston, TX)

Usually I don’t cover GTs but I was reached out to with an inside scoop on the last round so I figured I’ll post it here:

Primary Mission: Scorched Earth

Mission Rule: Sweep and Clear

Deployment: Crucible of Battle

Secondary Missions:

-Clarence (Space Wolves): Fixed, Deploy Teleport Homers and Bring it Down

-Bill (Admech): Tactical

This game was destined to be a lopsided one as Space Wolf Thunderwolf Calvary has a habit of mowing over anything in its path once it gets rolling, leaving it largely in the hands of the deployment and first turn roll as to how events play out, barring other considerations. Admech won the deployment roll-off and chose defender, immediately placing a unit of Sicarian Infiltrators across the mid-board to both hamper the Space Wolf scouts being deployed and to provide a first line body block to give Admech time to score before being torn apart by giant wolves. Deployment continued with another unit of Sicarians providing a further speedbump while the Space Wolves redirected their attention to deploying out of line of sight.

Admech win the roll for first turn, seemingly cementing a strong score lead by the toasters as Infiltrators are advanced up as far as possible to keep the cavalry in their deployment zone, followed by a second line of bodies in the form of Skystalkers taking up position and ready to move up to replace the infiltrators round 2, and Sterylizors as a conditional third line of defense, as the remaining Admech line advances into early scoring position. Then, the shooting phase happened, and in an attempt to move the Skystalkers further forward, Admech made the fatal mistake of shooting the Thunderwolf Calvary unit currently breathing heavily on the left flank infiltrators. The wolves then capitalized on this by using their Aggressive Hunter movement from the joined Battle Leader to immediately move into combat with the infiltrators, both protecting them from further fire, and starting the cascade destruction.

Space Wolf round one saw the left flank cavalry unit lope over the still-sparking bodies of the infiltrators and head straight into the unfinished second line of defense, murdering the Skystalkers as well while two units of Wulfen come through the gap left by the slain infiltrators in order to assault the Sterylizors and Skystalkers in center-field. The center unit of wolves moved forward into the infiltrators in their way as a third unit utilizes the Hunter’s Instincts enhancement to come in from reserves on the right flank, and use the Shock Assault stratagem to tear into the Skitarii on the nearby objective; eliminating all of the Admech player’s planned screens in the first round of play. The remaining time of the game was left to both players attempting to rack up as many points as possible, with the Space Wolves padding a victory, and Admech simply trying to up their score as skitarii are slaughtered by the Wolf Jail and are only able to put up token resistance by slaying the Wulfen and the Gladiator Lancer in an attempt at secondaries and delaying the inevitable.

Space Wolf Victory

Final Score: 95-56

Woof, sounds like a hell of a final round. Gotta say I was pulling for the admech when I saw they made it to the last round but I guess they’re an underdog for a reason.
