2023 World Championships AOS Player Profile: Thomas Guan

The World Championships of Warhammer are next week and we’re prepping by talking to some of the key competitors at this year’s event – many of whom are also competing for top honors in the ITC. We sat down with Thomas to talk to them about their plans and expectations for the event itself.

Run us through your list a little bit. What made you choose this list, and why do you enjoy playing it?

The list is based around 8 morghast archai and how fast they are and the damage they can do. It’s really flexible and it lets you get a favourable board position.

What does the list do well against? What match-ups are you hoping to avoid?

It does very well into melee lists and I hope to avoid lists that are faster than mine.

Are there any battleplans that you’re hoping to avoid? Why?

The list is very favourable on most missions but I hope to avoid a fountain of frost.

The World Championships of Warhammer isn’t the largest event ever, but it’s certainly the first of its kind. What was your road getting to the event like? Was it something you were aiming for?

It took some effort getting the golden ticket, and I had to fight through many competitions at the FLG Outlaw Gt in Dallas to get my ticket.

How does it feel to be going to the event? Are you nervous? Excited? How does it compare to LVO?

It feels the same as going to any event, I will try to do my best and this is no different than any other GT

How do you feel about the event’s unique country-based scoring? Does it add excitement to later rounds for you?

Yes it does, makes it so that I will try hard and win every round.

How do you expect the competition to be different from other events? Is there anything you’re doing differently to prepare?

Tougher rounds overall compared to other events and I prepare for all the singles events the same way.

How do you expect you’ll do at the event? What’s a “good event” look like for you, record-wise?

I expect that if I play well, I will win the event. A good event for me is when I win all my games.

How do you feel about competitive play in this GHB season? How does the meta feel to you right now?

This GHB is the toughest to play out of all the previous GHB in AOS 3.0. The meta feels very healthy outside of a couple of factions.

You’re currently still in the hunt for the ITC crown this year, and this event could replace one of your scores. How does that factor into your plans?

This event is unlikely to replace any of my other itc scores and I do not think too much about the ITC implications.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer our questions. Good luck at the event!
