Eldfall Chronicles : Northern Wind Model Review

We’d like to thank Freecompany for sending over a couple of miniatures from their upcoming dungeon crawler, Eldfall Chronicles: Northern Wind for us to have a look at.

Freecompany had an absolutely barnstormer of a crowdfunding campaign, blasting their funding goal in half an hour and topping out with a quarter of a million euro. It’s safe to say the tabletop community is pretty excited for the promise that these relatively new Slovenian developers have brought to their two projects, this game and its predecessor which is more in the vein of a competitive skirmish.

As part of the Northern Wind crowdfunding campaign they’ve suggested that the models will be usable in either game, which is a nice little bit of value for money, especially since the skirmish rules are freely available on the Freecompany website. It’s important for me to note that the models I got my hands on are pre-production 3d prints rather than the finished articles cast in plastic, so as you can see, it wouldn’t be fair for me to hold forth on the quality of the model, when for you as the reader/potential buyer the construction of the models will be different. So instead I’ll focus on the design and what I like about them.

Northern Wind continues and builds upon the anime/JRPG aesthetic established in the Eldfall skirmish game, and I admit, it’s one that I quite like, the poses of the miniatures are bursting with dynamism and character. A particular standout for me is the red Oni Raesetsu poised to spring from her appropriately massive anime sword, the sculpt is top-notch, fitting into an ethos of making models detailed but not so detailed as to become cluttered and difficult to get some colour onto, and was plenty of fun to paint.

I had fun with these two, taking a good amount of time to paint them as they were so rewarding, even now looking at the pictures I’m pretty proud of myself. I’m sure once the Northern Wind game is finally released it’ll be tons of fun to crawl the icy dungeon of the north with them. As mentioned before, these are preproduction 3d prints, I’m sure the retail ones cast in plastic will be even more sharply detailed and user friendly. I look forward to what the Freecompany team come up with next!

If you missed the crowdfunding campaign for Eldfall Chronicles: Northern Wind, you can find a link to it here. As of this writing they’re currently on their last day of accepting late pledges, so if you want to get in on it, you’d best hurry up.
