The Best Year in Gaming: Round 2 in the Southwest Conference, Part 1

Welcome back to our Best Year in Gaming March Madness bracket competition! Yesterday we polished off the second round in our Northeast conference, where both of our scrappy underdogs lost to superior years coming in at higher seeds – though the competition between 1987 and 2009 was pretty close, with the latter winning by only a few votes.

Results: 1991 and 2009 win

Today we’re moving back to the Southwest conference, where we look at another of the four strongest years in our competition.

VS.

One of the strongest contenders in our competition finally makes itself known and 1994 is a real powerhouse here, sporting a number of key events. It’s the height of the 16-bit era, with Sega and Nintendo squaring off and Nintendo finally winning the console wars. It’s also the year Magic: the Gathering really took off with its expansions and won hearts the world over. And it’s the year of a number of key developments in tabletop RPGs, from the publication of Vampire: the Masquerade to Planescape.

VS.

Our other pair of matchups today sees another close bout, as 1997 takes on 2008. We’ve already talked about 1997 as a strong year for the Playstation and PC games, but today it’s up against one of the stronger years of the sixth console generation, squaring off against the likes of Grand Theft Auto 4, Dead Space, Left 4 Dead,Ā andĀ Mirror’s Edge.Ā But where 2008 really shines is on the tabletop – Dungeons & Dragons’ fourth edition, Warhammer 40k’s fifth edition,Ā Dixit, andĀ Dominion. That’s not one but two big Spiel des Jahres winners, with the latter spawning an entirely new genre of board games!

If youā€™re interested in voting on the outcome, head over to ourĀ PatreonĀ and join our Discord server to vote. Otherwise, check back tomorrow for the winner and the next matchup in the Southeast Conference.
